About The Children's Home

The Children's Home in Uummannaq was founded in 1929 by the Association 'Greenlandic Children', as a sanatorium for sick and orphaned children and adolescents. The Children's Home is Greenland's oldest and one of the world's northernmost residential institution.

The association 'Greenlandic Children' ran the sanatorium until the mid-1950s, when the operation was handed over to the Danish Ministry for Greenland. In 1979 the Children's Home operation moved under the Home Rule of Greenland, which in 2008 changed to the Self-Government of Greenland.

The Children's Home in Uummannaq offers a day and night treatment for Greenlandic children and young people, and it is operating with reference to the Department of Family and Justice.

The Children's Home is located in Uummannaq town, which is a small fishing and hunting community on an island in the North-West Greenland.

Our target group is early harmed children and young people aged 0 to 18 years, and persons with disabilities related to care failure.

Our job as treatment institution is to give children and youth a safe and predictable life, with good experiences and successes that can help to strengthen their self-worth and self-esteem.

Furthermore, our mission is to help children and young people to understand and recognize their own situation, through talk therapy, through music therapy, through therapy groups or through our camp school and projects so they can learn to live with the experiences and traumas they have in their luggage, in such a way that it is not going to control their lives.

A large part of our educational work is built around our colonies and projects. E.g. dogsled projects has over many years been the flagship along with projects such as hiking, hunting and fishing, music, art and film.

We do a lot of our work with children and young people, mixing the new modern society, with the old Greenlandic traditions and values. We do this to give children and young people, an identity, and knowledge of their culture and background as Greenlanders / Inuit's and at the same time teaching them how traditional culture can be implemented in modern life.
